Emm Gryner Rocks

Emm Gryner Rocks

Stevie G
How many artists do you know that offer a beautifully giftwrapped and autographed version of their new album, and even fill out a “to: from:” tag on the wrapping paper, all for the regular price of the album, just because it’s Christmas time? Well, Emm Gryner is doing just that, and it is really cool to recieve an autographed CD that’s wrapped and signed like a real christmas present from the artist: Emm really knows how to add that personal touch and let her fans know she cares about them (did I mention all of her albums have a space where they thank the listener for buying them)?

The album itself is pretty amazing itself, too. Called “Gem and I” (Love the pun), the album consists entirely of duets with Emm and other artists. The album has an incredibly talented lineup of vocalists, including Matt Nathanson, Joel Plaskett, Joe Elliot and Royal Wood amongst others (it’s really hard not to just list them all, because they’re all great… just look at a track listing), and Emm’s songwriting, singing and piano playing  are amazing as usual. Three songs that really jump out as breathtaking are “Almighty Love”,  a melancholy, and kind of sorrowful ballad about how confusing and unreasonable love can be, with more emotion than can be explained here (also a chance to hear the lead singer of  Def Leopard belting a soulful piano ballad),  “Boy With an Affliction”, which is probably the cutest song ever (Matt Nathanson and Emm’s voices and styles work together so well, the song makes you just plain happy. The two have wonderful chemistry), and Gold Soul of Rock and Roll, which is an incredibly enjoyable, lighthearted duet with Joel Plaskett that somehow makes a simple arpeggiating piano both catchy and original.
So I must apologize, because this is turning into more of an album review than a blog (which may happen alot), but I basically wanted a chance to share my love for an awesome artist, and recommend “Gem and I” to anybody who enjoys music (especially piano fans. Emm’s a great pianist who I look up to).
